The Lawyer All the Wickedness (Foggy/Matt | NC17 | 11,611 words): Set on Earth-65, DA Nelson gets to know Matt Murdock a bit better. This is a really fun getting together story for this universe and start of a redemption of Matt Murdock. It's an alternate take on canon in that I believe it was written before much was known about this Matt and where the comic was taking his story.

Excerpt:
Murdock steps aside, but only so he can walk up the aisle with Foggy, cane tapping ahead of them. Peachy. "My client was acquitted, Mr. Nelson."

"You and I both know that doesn't prove anything, Murdock." Foggy doesn't respect him enough to bother with a title.

"Only in the eyes of the law," Murdock says lightly. "Which we are both sworn to uphold, of course."

"Yeah. That keeping you up at night at all?"

He glances sidelong at Murdock and is surprised by the slow smile creeping over his face. Each perfect tooth gleams like a fang. "No," he says, his voice low and amused. "That's not keeping me up at night."

On The Usefulness of Fruit (Foggy/Matt | PG13 | 15,989 words | sequel to Rose-Colored Boy): After getting seriously injured while out as Daredevil, Matt refuses to let Foggy see him. Oh, this is wonderful. Matt and Foggy fight, and it's such a realistic fight. My heart hurts for both of them, and the resolution of the fight is perfect.

Excerpt:
"No, um," [Matt] put his hand on his side and groaned with the pain throbbing there. His whole body throbbed with it. "Can you text Foggy for me?"

"Oh, yeah," [Claire] said. "You passed out while you were giving me the number."

She finished unpacking the stuff she got at the drugstore and then sat on the coffee table in front of him with her phone out. Matt gave her Foggy's phone number and Claire tapped out a simple message. Matt released a small sigh of relief. At least he could assure Foggy he was alive.

"He asks if he can come by?" Claire said a moment later.

Matt shook his head quickly, his memories blinking through That Unfortunate Night again, making him break out into a clammy sweat and his heart rate increased. He didn’t want Foggy to see him like this. He couldn't have Foggy see him like this.

"No." He said. "Just tell him I'll be home in a day or two."

"Matt," Claire groaned.

"Please," Matt said, his eyebrows furrowing. "Please just say that."

Rose-Colored Boy (Foggy/Matt | NC17 | 15,429 words | sequel to I Now Pronounce You idiots in Love, sequel is On The Usefulness of Fruit): Foggy has plans to take Matt on a proper date; Matt struggles as Daredevil. This is a sweet and comforting fic while giving weight to Matt's struggles.

Excerpt:
"You're gonna see me tomorrow." Matt said as he affixed his glasses onto his face. He slipped on his shoes and bent to tie them.

"Yeah, I know." Foggy said. "Your night job just very much cuts into Matt Canoodling Time. I like Matt Canoodling Time." He muttered at the end and then stood up so he could walk Matt to the door.

"I like Matt Canoodling Time too." Matt teased him, getting himself pulled in by Foggy by his waist. He had to go. But, having Foggy's arms around him was dizzying in the best of ways, like a rollercoaster he didn't want off of.

"Then don't go." Foggy tried, his nose pressed against Matt's.

"Foggy, I have to." Matt knew this was going to be hard, but he didn't think it would be this hard. He cupped Foggy's face. "Can I come back in the morning? Before it's time to get up for work?"

"Yes, please." Foggy said, his lips brushing Matt's. "Please."

Stories to Tell in the Void (Matt, Foggy/Matt | G | 15,528 words): Matt messes with a wizard and ends up in avoid along with three other versions of himself. This is delightful. The characterization of each Matt is great. There's humor and fun and bonding, and it's all wonderful.

Excerpt:
"'Kay. Well, you live and you learn. We're going to need to assign names. I'm not calling all of you Matt."

"I'll be Murdock,” the angry one decided, as if he could just call dibs.

"Aye, just swipe it from the rest of us," the Irish one snarked dryly, echoing Matt's thoughts, "we don't mind a bit."

"If you wanted it, you should have spoken up," the self-declared Murdock said.

"No," Matt scoffed. "That's too confusing. Do you have… I don't know. A job title?"

"I'm a lawyer," he replied, unimpressed.

"Same," the man across from him said.

"What manner of accent is that?" groused the Irish one. "It's no English I've heard in the wide world, nor foreign tongue."

"I'm going to assume this guy's from like, out of time," the man across from him decided. "What with all the prose and… such."

Hornhead (Matt | PG13 | 10,599 words): Matt begins to develop...demonic features, starting with waking up with horns. This is a fun comics-style romp.

Excerpt:
"Maybe they're just... stuck on?" Matt had said desperately after Foggy had collected himself. He didn't really want to touch them. Maybe if he didn't accept them as part of reality, they'd vanish as suddenly as they appeared.

"They look pretty... part-of-your-skull-y, Matt."

Matt sat down at his kitchen table, almost buried his head in his hands before he remembered he didn't want to touch anything. He settled for slouching and feeling lost at sea. Okay. Deep breath. "What do they look like?"

"I mean, they're not crazy. They're like the ones on your mask. Red. Kinda ... dinky?"

The Flexible Concept of Tomorrow (Donna-Mulder, Mulder/Scully | PG13 | 11,244 words): Five time Donna and Mulder meet plus one time for each of them they don't remember. This is so neat. Donna and Mulder is an unlikely but awesome friendship.

Excerpt:
The first time he remembers seeing her, they're almost the same age.

Something huge slamming down from the sky just caused a blast wave that knocked him clear off his feet. The bridge is so much floating matchwood and ahead, a fireball consumes the center of a densely packed wood. He walks towards the crash site, flashlight in one hand, gun in the other, one part scared to five parts thrilled at the thought of seeing a ship at last.

He catches a glimpse of red hair ahead of him and just for a moment, his spirits leap at the thought that Scully pushed aside her objections and came out here after all. As he gets closer he realizes that the woman isn't Scully. She's about five inches too tall, longer hair, more broadly built and the jacket's brown leather. There's something vaguely familiar about her. She's also walking very fast in the wrong direction, her breath blowing out in white clouds as she labors up the hill.

"Ma'am," he calls out. She turns around. She's older than Scully, with a scowl on her narrow face. She's muttering under her breath. "Ma'am, I need you to move away from the crash site. It could be dangerous."

"Should've known you'd be here, Mulder," she says, in an accent he immediately identifies as from London. "Great big trouble magnet, you are; just like him."

"How do you know my name?" he asks, the hairs on the back of his neck prickling.

There's A Way (Foggy/Matt | R | 18,760 words | sequel to Water's Rough): Matt's life with Foggy and their children is going well until Foggy gets sick and Bullseye shows up again. This is a fun adventure with lots of heart that also, if you're familiar with them, incorporates a lot of bits from the comics in a neat way.

Excerpt:
"What's up?" Foggy asks, because of course he's noticed that Matt's distracted. They've known each other for a long time, now.

"Someone's following us," Matt whispers. Foggy's heartbeat spikes.

"Should we take a different route?" Foggy asks. We shouldn't go home, Foggy doesn't say, but Matt knows it's true as if they had spoken it. Matt steers Foggy to the right instead of the left, away from their apartment, and starts planning how to best take down whoever's coming after them. Foggy's steps falter, and he guides them down an alleyway.

"Trash can on your left," Foggy says. Matt picks up the lid of it just as someone jumps from the roof and lands in the alleyway with them. "Jesus Christ—"

"Murdock and Murdock," a voice says. It's Benjamin Poindexter. He sounds… different, than the last time Matt had spoken to him, years ago.

"Nice costume," Foggy comments. Matt shuffles slightly, hoping that he's obscuring Foggy from view. Foggy's heart is thumping loud, fast, but he's not afraid, not yet. It's just adrenaline. He;s ready to fight, too. "I particularly like that little target on your head."

"It's a bullseye," Dex says.

"Oh, you're Bullseye," Foggy says. Matt wants him to be quiet, just for one second, but, if he didn't try to talk his way out of everything, he wouldn't be Foggy. Instead, Matt uses the time Foggy's buying them, determines the exact shape of the alley, the placement of everything in it, and how best to take Bullseye down with minimal carnage and noise. "Came back for seconds?"

Vampires and Vigilantes (Buffy-Matt | PG13 | 11,162 words): Buffy visits New York on slayer business and in the process meets Daredevil. This is a really fun team-up with Buffy making friends with Matt, Karen, and Foggy.

Excerpt:
She heads into the cemetery, Mike a step behind, but walking like he knows where he's going. At the first new grave she finds, Buffy halts; it's as good a place to wait as any. Mike leans on a gravestone next to her. "Fresh soil," he says. "So, you been doing this long?"

"Slaying?" Buffy sighs, and twirls her stake in her fingers. "Too long. Since I was 16."

He turns his head in her direction. "I can't get a feel for how old you are now. That could be four years, or 20."

"More like 20 and change," Buffy says. "How long have you been vigilante-ing? Is that even a word?"

He laughs. It's a good laugh, and his smile is warm. "It'll do. A few years. Properly. Was taught to fight when I was about 10."

"Shit, that's way too young," she says, with feeling. He shrugs.

"It's fine. It helped at a bad time." He stops talking, holds up his hand. "Something's...something's just broken through down there. I can hear it scrabbling up through the soil."

When Your Arms Are Too Weary (Foggy/Matt | PG13 | 15,768 words): An angels and demons arranged marriage AU. This is just lots of fun. There's tons of pining and sweetness and angst, making for a delicious read.

Excerpt:
"Do you want me to pick something up for you?" he asks.

Now Matt looks up, though not really at Foggy, and he looks genuinely startled. "Why?"

"Uh, because breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I don't want you fainting away in class?" Foggy says, trying for a jovial tone. "You gotta eat, buddy. I'm not totally sure how the demon thing works but the angel thing definitely doesn't give me the power to skip meals." He pauses. "You…do eat regular food, right? I saw you eating an apple the other day, although maybe that was just for the symbolism."

Something like a laugh escapes from Matt before he can stop himself, and Foggy wants to punch the air in triumph. "No. For the vitamin C."

There's a brief beat, an awkward half-step of silence before Matt says, "You really don't have to get me anything," at the same time Foggy says, "Come with me."

Matt's ears go red. "I don't want to impose."

Might as well call out the elephant in the room, if he's gonna sit there all gray and humongous like that. "We're married," Foggy says. "Presumably for life, it didn't sound like divorce was on the table. Having breakfast with you for fifteen minutes is not an imposition." He shrugs one shoulder. Matt might be touchy about this, and probably a little homophobic, but… "Besides, it'd be nice to get to know you. I'm not saying this is going to be a love for the ages or anything, but we might as well be friends, don't you think?"

Matt makes the same strange, crumply face he made when Foggy called him "buddy," as if he can’t figure out what the right expression would be. He doesn't say anything for a long moment, and Foggy's just about to backpedal and flee when Matt takes the earbud out.

The Boxer-Puncher (Foggy/Matt | NC17 | 11,063 words): Foggy takes up boxing. I love this version of Matt and Foggy getting together, how it's been a long time coming and is only enhanced by the boxing.

Excerpt:
"You've got some serious guns going on here," Karen informs him. She squeezes a bicep as she does so, and why is this not the weirdest thing that's ever happened to him.

"I feel left out," Matt says from the doorway, grinning like the shit he is. "Can I have a go?"

"Oh my god yes," Karen says, and reaches out to guide Matt to Foggy's side. Matt lets her, and Foggy may have to kill them both. He could take Karen easily, he reckons, especially while she's this distracted, but Matt might be more of a problem-

"Stop thinking of ways to kill us," Matt says, laughing, but abruptly stops when Karen unnecessarily guides one of his hands to Foggy's arm. Foggy's hand automatically closes into a fist to stop himself reaching out to touch Matt back - he's had his ration, a hug that morning when they arrived - and Matt makes a noise low in his throat.

It's more like a rumble, because Foggy feels it where they're touching.

The phone rings and Karen reluctantly lets go of his arm to answer it, which is good, great even, because Matt's still holding tightly to his other bicep and oh god, there's not enough denial in the world for them to ignore this. They don't even say anything for a long moment, Matt's hands hot through the fabric of Foggy's t-shirt, and one of his thumbs rubbing little circles against his skin.

What Love Is (According to Foggy Nelson) (Foggy/Matt | PG13 | 17,357 words): Over the years, Matt learns how Foggy defines love. This is a very sweet overview of Matt and Foggy's relationship over the course of canon and then beyond into a romantic relationship. There's no dramatic gestures, just two people who by the end of it are choosing each other and who want to be there for each other.

Excerpt:
Foggy let out a deep, long-suffering sigh, but Matt could practically feel the smile he was trying to force away.

"No. You haven't. Because you're a weird human lie detector."

"Exactly. So we can help her."

"I wasn't planning on going back on our word, even if our word was your word without much input from me."

"Thanks, Foggy. Just trust me. We'll win this one."

"Well. I've gone along with your stupid decisions before, and I'll do it again. So even if we don't, we'll make it through."

Matt put his fist out for Foggy to bump it.

"For the record, this isn't a stupid decision. But I appreciate the thought."

"That's what you say every time." Foggy bumped his fist against Matt's, though, and did the little breath thing through his nose that he did before he told a joke every time. "Can you guess what I'm gonna say next, Matt? My catchphrase?"

"Something something that's what love is something cheesy." Matt grinned in Foggy's direction. "Like you do every time we do something together."

"Only when you look like you're having an emotional crisis. Maybe talk to me before taking on a client next time, but it's okay, Matt."

"I'm not having an emotional crisis. I'm not usually having an emotional crisis when you use that line, actually."

"No? Well. That's because it works."

"If you say so, buddy."

Like This Before (Booster/Ted | G | 10,300 words): Ted doesn't remember Booster, but Booster says he knows Ted from an alternate universe. I believe this was written at least partially in response to DC's 52 reboot and wanting to add Ted into that new version of canon, although I had mostly stopped paying attention to DC at this point so I may be missing incorrect. Either way, this is a fun meeting of Booster and Ted finding each other no matter what, with a lot of humor and feels.

Excerpt:
"Yeah, you should get that checked out. I know that you hate the beach and I know that you wish you could stay in the lab all day instead of running the company and I know that you had a poster of Nicola Tesla on your wall as a kid. I know you, Ted." Booster slumped, clearly frustrated. "I just don't know how I know you."

Ted stared at him. "Erdel's Principle, huh?"

"I'm guessing," Booster said.

"And how do I know you aren't just a really thorough stalker and this isn't all some kind of elaborate hoax?"

"Do you really think I'm that clever?" Booster asked.

Ted couldn't help it. He laughed. The effect on Booster was remarkable: he absolutely lit up, like he'd accomplished something marvelous. Ted had a sudden, irrational urge to see if he could make Booster smile like that again.

Waking Up On The Wrong Side Of The Bed (Alec/Magnus, Clary/Jace | PG13 | 15,188 words): Clary and Alec switch bodies. This is just plain fun. Awkward and weird for Alec and Clary and their partners, but fun for me reading it. I like the details about what feels different about being Clary's body, and I like how both couples find ways to express affection while still being respectful of the body they're in.

Excerpt:
Clary scoffed. "I can walk fine. Mostly. Your feet are so big, though. I stubbed your toe earlier, too. Sorry."

"It's fine," Alec said. The sensation of having to lift his arm high up to place it on his own shoulder was very strange. "Our bodies are pretty different."

She laughed half-heartedly. They sat on the couch again. "Is it weird being a whole foot shorter?"

Alec repressed the urge to grumble. "I have to look up at Jace now to talk to him. It's the worst thing ever." It was offensive, really. In no world should Jace be taller than him.

That won him a real laugh, though it quickly turned into choking when Clary's too-high laugh twisted Alec's vocal chords in a new way. Alec decided he was thankful he wasn't too prone to bouts of random laughter. It sounded painful.

"It's really not that bad," she insisted. "I know it's different than you're used to, but a lot of us shorties find it attractive when someone is tall. Just wait 'til you’re standing next to Magnus."

No. No, Alec couldn't think about Magnus being so much taller than him, no way.

Hiding From Your Home (Alec/Magnus | PG13 | 13,586 words | companion piece is Mischief): Magnus acquires a Dragonstone with a dragon attached, and Alec and the dragon take a liking to each other. This is incredibly sweet, even the angsty parts manage to be sweet. The baby dragon is adorable, and Alec being part dragon and the conflicts resulting from that make me feel for him.

Excerpt:
"Wanna make a trade?" Alec asks, holding out the stone, "My stone for yours? As I understand, you'll even get your own back after a while, and I promise I'll keep refreshing the heat rune on this until then."

The dragon looks back and forth between Alec and the stone in his hand, even stretches far enough to sniff it, or maybe Alec, then looks to Magnus. After a moment, Magnus realizes Alec is looking at him too.

"What?"

"You said you'd give the Dragonstone back when you're done with it, right?"

"It'll take about a day to brew the potion, and the stone will be very slightly weaker after, but yes, I promise I'll give it back."

"How's that sound?" Alec asks, turning back to the dragon. Another moment passes before the dragon jumps up on the stone still in Alec's hand, leaving the Dragonstone behind on the table. It immediately curls up in Alec's hand and—starts purring?

"How." Magnus demands. He has spent hours trying to bargain with the dragon and Alec just. Did it. Magnus didn’t even know dragons could purr.

"I'm the oldest of four and I've been more or less running the Institute for years now. I can negotiate." Alec looks almost smug as he stands back up. The dragon wraps its tail around his wrist. "It probably helps that I'm—uhm. That I'm a Shadowhunter."

"Oh? How so?"

Why I Lied to You (Fraser/Kowalski | NC17 | 19,877 words): Fraser and Ray, set during the 1930s Prohibition era. This is such an interesting setting, especially as it's set mostly in Detroit/Windsor rather than Chicago. The romance that blooms between Fraser and Ray is gentle and sweet.

Excerpt:
So we ended up in a little diner Fraser knew. It was in a quiet street, not far from the docks but full of people from another world: clerks and copyists and factory girls. Instinctively we both wanted to keep out of the clip joints where the bootleggers hung out. I got the impression Fraser hadn't come here very often before, if ever. He didn't greet the waitress by name or inquire after the bartender's wife and children, as I'd seen him do in even the sleaziest dives.

Fraser had a glass of orange juice, and I had a beer. I'd hesitated before ordering but hey, I was in Canada, right? It wasn't even illegal.

Fraser had been pretty quiet, and pretty stiff, since we'd left his office. As if he wasn't sure if he wanted to come after all. Then once we were sitting down facing, it was like he made a conscious effort to relax.

"Thought you might have forgotten me," I said, only half joking.

"Oh no." His eyes had gone wide and surprised.

"Huh. Great."

"On the contrary," he added.

That made me grin. I still didn't know what to say next, though, so I looked back down into my beer.

"So, uh, you see any interesting wildlife recently?"

For a second he just stared, like he was wondering whether there was some sort of double meaning in the question. Then he smiled, his first genuine smile since he'd seen me through the window, and bam, the starting pistol fired and he was off.

My heart is the shore (Blathers/Tom | G | 10,048 words): Blathers moves to Mayumi when Tom invites him in order to have a fresh start. This is a really gentle romance interspersed with bits of Blathers's island life.

Excerpt:
"Ah, there is the question of your lodging, yes?" Tom asks. "As you can see, currently everyone is living in tents as of now. You wouldn't mind the tent life for a little bit, hm? I promise it is all temporary! Now, if you would follow me…"

Tom leads Blathers out of the tent, and just a short walk away was a tent meant for him. It would have been a perfectly normal tent. In fact, it is one—sans the surrounding multitude of tanks and containers filled with a variety of fish, and—to Blathers's horror—bugs. The tanks and containers were stacked so high that Blathers feared the worst should one topple over. Worst case scenario is an insect goes loose and jumps into his face—oh good feathers is that a tarantula? Blathers may faint.

Beside him, Tom clears his throat. "As you can see," he says, "there are plenty of creatures ready for donation, yes."

The tarantula is staring at him. Staring at him with its eight ghastly beady eyes. Blathers gulps. "T-The residents of this island are very active, aren't they?"

"Oh, these were all caught by Marsie," Tom says. "She's our Resident Rep. I didn't have space for more than five fish and bugs, so I suppose she found her own way to store everything she caught."

News Flies to Edonomee (Csevet | G | 10,281 words): The beginning of The Goblin Emperor from Csevet's point of view. This does such a good job of showing why Csevet makes the decision to help Maia and how Maia inspires such devotion in the characters loyal to him. The world-building is also top-notch, this very much feels another bit of canon.

Excerpt:
"I…we must speak with our cousin." Maia was clearly unaccustomed to the formal first person; Csevet did not expect anything else after having spoken to Nelar. He bowed his head slightly, accepting the dismissal, but Maia went on. "Do you…that is, you must be tired. Let us summon a manservant to tend to your needs."

"Your Serenity is very kind."

Csevet almost choked on the words: he only was able to utter them more or less smoothly because of the years in a service where formality and manners sometimes meant the difference between life and death. It was not as if he needed to be tended to: it was the fact that Maia Drazhar, knowing himself emperor, recognized him not only as someone to be asked, then thanked, but also someone with probable needs.

Maia rang the bell and a small, delicately built boy entered so soon that he must have been listening at the door – by no means a manservant, but Csevet suspected he was the only one around. The boy smiled openly at him, probably eager for anything to break the bleak routine he must lead.

Daredevil is Into Me (Sexually) (Foggy/Matt | R | 15,622 words): When someone catches Daredevil meeting with Foggy and then the police ask Foggy why, Foggy panics with his answer. This is delightfully fun. All of the dialogue is aces, and Foggy and Matt are so comfortable in each other's space in a way that speaks of long-term intimacy, which is what I love for them. It's one of those fics where I'm grinning the whole time I'm reading it.

Excerpt:
Matt disappears into the bedroom and comes out a little while later wearing reinforced leather, hair disheveled and mask in hand.

"You creak when you walk," Foggy points out.

Matt bounces on his knees a little and smiles as the costume squeaks. "Needs to warm up."

"Well come here, then," Foggy says, pushing himself up from the couch and holding his arms open.

Matt shuffles closer, chin tilted up and eyes crinkled. He leans into Foggy, solid and heavy, and Foggy pulls him even closer. "Sorry," Foggy whispers as Matt's arms snake around his back, "I know you do this like, all the time, and I'm being dramatic."

"Don't be sorry," Matt says, swaying them a little. "It's kinda nice."

Foggy drags his cheek up to rest against Matt's temple. "Hugs?"

"Just… someone. Here. That cares."

Foggy sighs. "You're such a fucking orphan."

Matt snorts, his head falling back, and grins at the ceiling. "Dick."

Soft Focus (Quatre/Trowa | PG13 | 11,730 words): Trowa takes up photography and asks Quatre to model for him. This is beautiful. There's a gentle vulnerability threaded throughout the photography sessions as Quatre opens up to Trowa, and the second half of the fic, where Quatre and Trowa have to deal with their relationship being known, is lovely as well. I enjoy getting to see Quatre's relationship with some of his sisters.

Excerpt:
Trowa played idly with the camera, one hand loosely curled about the nearest leg of the tripod. Suddenly he glanced up. "Do you still play?" he asked.

"Play what?" Quatre said stupidly.

"The violin."

Oh. "Not much," he confessed. "I don't really have the time to do it right."

"Do you miss it?"

He drew a deep breath and let it out. "Yes," he said. "I miss it a lot. It... it was good not to be me, when I played."

"What do you mean?" Trowa asked quietly.

Quatre gestured to the stereo. "It wasn't my music. It was someone else's work. I had to try to play it well, to reach what they were feeling, to– to try to connect to it myself, but essentially it wasn't me. When I was really working hard for it, when it was just right, I forgot about everything but just the music. Like I was just there to make it come alive."

"Show me."

He stopped. "What do you mean?"

"Show me," Trowa repeated.

"I don’t have my violin."

"Pretend."

Come, for Life is a Frail Moth Flying (Csevet/Maia | R | 11,194 words): Csevet hires a new undersecretary. This feels like an extension of canon that's focused on Csevet, with all the care for the characters (including original characters) and worldbuilding and sweet romance that I could hope for, all wrapped up with a lovely bit of plot.

Excerpt:
On the third day, she delivers a folder to Mer Aisava while he's meeting with the Emperor. Just outside the door, Rosharo runs into a young woman, goblin-dark and graceful, with delicate features and long eyelashes. Her name is Isheian, Rosharo learns. Despite the time she's spent honing her manners to something which doesn't give away her humble beginnings, Rosharo feels downright ungraceful as she stutters out her own name. Isheian doesn't seem to mind, taking her leave with a sweet smile that crinkles the corners of her eyes.

Curiously, Mer Aisava is blushing when she walks into the dining room, but far more distracting is the Emperor himself. His Serenity is goblin-dark like Rosharo's late half-brother, though his eyes are grey like Rosharo's own. Arrayed in yards upon yards of snowy imperial white, he's practically dripping with jewels. Opals on his fingers, gold and emerald rings in his ears. Amethysts and something red, garnets or rubies, glittering in his hair. His dark curls are braided and arranged in an up-do that almost looks like it shouldn't stay up, but does nonetheless. Rosharo knows little of what the edocharei do, but she decides she admires them then and there. Even the jacket His Serenity is wearing to breakfast is a work of art, silk brocade embroidered in forest green and gold, with stitches so fine the designs almost appear painted.

This is Edrehasivar VII. The Emperor. A living legend.

Still, Rosharo's prepared. She knows the rules of how to behave around the nobility, deferential and silent, and—

And then it feels like all her preparation goes straight out the window. Because instead of treating her like part of the furniture, the Emperor proceeds to do the one thing she didn't expect:

His Serenity smiles and asks Mer Aisava to introduce her.
